Common columbine is usually a blue or purple “nodding bonnet” type flower.

It is widespread throughout the UK but not common.

The petals are said to look like 5 doves in a ring which made it a popular carving in churches.

When the flowers die they leave fruit that hold many seeds.

The flowers of some species of columbine are eaten by Native Americans as a condiment. However the seeds and roots are highly toxic and should never be eaten.
